Students learn to listen to sound more carefully. Although almost everybody plays with beautiful tone while tuning the violin, many press the bow and make a terrible sound when they start playing, especially double stops. The first exercises in this book are to practice playing the double stops with beautiful tone while listening to the resonance. There are exercises to shift the fingers between the G string and the E string, moving upward and downward in fifths. There are also many exercises to practice listening to the resonance of open strings. Learn More

Beautiful Music for Two String Instruments, Book III

    By Samuel Applebaum

    £22.95

The study of string instruments should include ensemble playing at the earliest possible stage. There is much to be gained from the playing of duets. Each player learns how to listen to the other, and in a short time develops an awareness of balance, musical phrasing, intonation, and tone quality. This type of training is excellent preparation for participation in large groups. These four volumes of duets for two violins will help fill the need for early ensemble experience in the public schools. They should be used in string classes as a supplement to any of the standard string methods. They will also encourage music making outside of the school, with parents or with other students. These duets are ideal for recitals in the public schools and in public school festivals. They may be played by two performers, or by multiple performers on each part, with or without piano accompaniment. Learn More

By Amy Beach / arr. Joan Manen

    £16.50

    36-M310191

The Sonata in A minor for Violin and Piano dates from 1897 and was premiered in the same year with the composer at the piano and Franz Kneisl, concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the violin soloist. In the Morning Journal, January 5, 1897, Mr. C. L. Capen describes the sonata as “an eminently sincere, spontaneous and able work, and one that bears the stamp of originality, as well as scholarship of surpassing merit.” The opening movement, Allegro moderato, is dark and autumnal, followed by a bright Scherzo, complete with contrasting trio. The third movement, Largo con dolore, is mournful and elegaic, and the finale, Allegro con fuoco is explosive and dramatic and exhibits effective canonic counterpoint between the instruments. Stylistically, the Sonata is influenced by Schumann, Brahms and Franck. It was first published by the Arthur P. Schmidt Company in 1899 and has since become one of Beach's most popular pieces.
